Ouch, Game Engine Unity Company Will Lay Off 1,800 Employees

The wave of layoffs in the gaming industry continues. This time the sad news came again from Unity.

The game engine company will reportedly send home 1,800 of its workers. That number is around 25 percent of its total employees, quoted by Game Station from Reuters, Wednesday (10/1/2023).

This is the largest layoff in history that Unity has ever experienced. They hope that the dismissal process can be completed by the end of March 2024.

“We are reducing the number of things we do to focus on our core business and drive long-term success and profitability,” interim CEO Jim Whitehurst wrote in an internal memo sent to all employees on January 8.

But here Whitehurst does not provide specific details regarding the structural changes that will occur in Unity. Only a company spokesperson confirmed that there will indeed be updates in the future.

Yes, Whitehurst is the new CEO of Unity, after the previous John Ricetello decided to resign. This was done after the new policy issue which was protested by many game developers around the world.

The root of the problem lies in the new payment scheme which uses a pay per download system. In this scheme, Unity will charge fees for using the game engine based on the number of game installations, and it is said that this concept will be implemented on January 1, 2024.

As additional information, this is the fourth round of layoffs carried out by the company. More than 1,100 people were laid off in 2023, preceded by at least 200 layoffs in June 2022.

These latest layoffs continue a bad trend in the video game industry, which saw around six thousand jobs lost by 2023. It doesn’t look like things will get any better in 2024.

More Game Revenue, Tencent is ahead of Sony and Microsoft

Recently, a study revealed that Tencent outperformed large companies such as Sony, Apple, Microsoft and Google in terms of revenue in the gaming industry. They occupy first position, with much more income.

This data was released by Newzoo, which collected sales information from each well-known game publisher during the first half of 2023. Compiled by Game Station from its official website, Monday (27/11/2023), they then compared it with the 2022 report.

It can be seen that here Sony, Apple and Microsoft have experienced an increase this year compared to before. But that’s not enough to overthrow Tencent, which has twice the revenue as them.

Referring to data revealed by Newzoo, Sony experienced growth of 8.7%. That way, game revenue in the first half of 2023 could reach USD 8 billion or around IDR 124.4 trillion.

Then Apple is in third place, because it was able to generate USD 6.9 billion or around Rp. 107.3 trillion. Meanwhile, Microsoft grew 3.5% compared to the first semester of 2022, so that previously the figure was USD 5.88 billion or around IDR 91.4 trillion, to USD 6 billion or around IDR 93.3 trillion.

As has been said, even though its income is very large and increasing, it is not yet able to compete with Tencent. This video game giant has more fantastic income.

Even though the numbers have fallen, this is still too much and difficult to overcome. They were recorded as earning USD 15.4 billion or around IDR 239.5 trillion during the half term of 2023.

From these values, it can be seen that Microsoft has a big chance to take second place. This is because they have acquired Activision Blizzard.
